Perhaps why Porto Covo is such and attraction is because of this region’s incredibly rich history. The nearby Island of Pessegueiro is where the earliest records of human settlement is found. These records date back to the 1st millennium BC during the Carthaginian and Roman Empire trading times.

Economics and the obsession of power later fuelled wars between Syracuse, Numidia, and Rome with respective invasions of each other’s homeland. By the time Rome conquered Hispania around 19 BC, Pessegueiro Island transitioned itself into hosting a small fish-processing centre, as determined by archaeological excavations, which discovered the remains of salt tanks along the southern coast.

Construction began on the Fort of Pessegueiro Island in 1590, which was set to occupy a dominant position of the island, with the purpose of providing military support to a mainland fort around Porto Covo. Unfortunately, the project was halted in 1598 in order to construct the Fort of Vila Nova de Milfontes, elsewhere in Portugal.

Today, the Island of Pessegueiro is also notable for the 15th-16th century fort located at its center and Roman ruins that lay along the coast.
